Oxidative stress is an imbalance between the production of oxidants and anti-oxidants in aerobic species. There are several causes of high production of free radicals during surgery and during healing. Oxidative stress is induced mainly by ischaemia, inflammation and anxiety. The immediate effect is bone resorption. Management of some biologic disorders, such as low serum vitamin D and high cholesterol, are the first steps towards prevention. However, the main factor of oxidative stress is the presence of soft tissue chronic tension or pressure on bone. This lecture will discuss prevention and management of such factors. The use of growth factors, such as A-PRF & i-PRF as stimulators of angiogenesis, as a means to prevent or minimise oxidative stress will be presented.
